Time & The Human Mind

Time & The Human Mind

I have been asked to re-post some great tools for changing your life!

Do you desire to be more than what you’ve been?  Do you know you are capable of more?  Do you know what path you would need to take to be more of what you want of what you are desirous to be?

What is NLP?  NLP is the modeling of excellence.  It is the discovery and duplication of patterns of excellence of successful people for the purpose of enhancing lives by teaching these patterns and strategies of excellence.

NLP came into existence during the early 1970’s out of the curiosity of John Grinder and Richard Bandler.  These men began a modeling project of three very famous therapists.  They chose to model these therapists because all three were creating tremendous changes in the human condition outside the Freudian and Jungian Models and each therapist used totally different styles of therapy.

They are Virginia Satire, who developed the family form of therapy, Milton Erickson, who developed the greatest form of hypnosis and the know-how of working with the unconscious mind known today as Ericksonian Hypnosis, and Fritz Pearls, who discovered Gestalt Therapy.  All three had an extremely different approach to the style of the therapy they did and yet, they were all very successful.

John Grinder and Richard Bandler chose to observe these therapists because of their successes.  The interesting observation was that they had success in what they did and how they did therapy without an absolute understanding of the processes they were using.  In fact, Milton Erickson wrote a letter to John Grinder and Richard Bandler and thanked them for explaining to him the processes he used and how he has such success.

These therapists were exquisitely good at intuiting and guiding client’s problems to resolution. They had what is called unconscious competency.  Have you ever had unconscious competency in something?  Unconscious competency means you are “just” good at what ever it is you know how to do without having to put much thought to it.  Perhaps it’s a sport, math, or driving a car that comes natural to you.  It is doing something with little or no effort.

NLP is applicable in sports, business, therapy, learning, educational fields, etc.  It’s broad applications cross the context of all of the human experience.  Why is this?  It is literally the owner’s manual for the human mind.  If you are going to tune up a car, program a VCR, put one of those difficult pieces of furniture together, you would be required to have some directional manual, would you not?  Have you ever attempted to do one of these activities and experience frustration?

Here we are in the most complex organism on this planet called the human body.  The human body contains more neurological possibilities then every grain of sand on every beach on this planet.  No one has ever come along and said, “Would you like to know how to use it?”  How did you create your unique beliefs, attitudes, and perspectives?  How did you encode your memory to instantly retrieve them?  How did you design the strategies you use to either motivate or sabotage?  How did you do it? If you had an owner’s manual that could show you how, could you fix it, could you adjust it?  You could!

Now every great thinker has consistently said that there’s only one thing to do here and that is to know ‘you.  In all of our relationships, what we are really involved with is a deep intrinsic relationship with ourselves, in the context of another person.

Have you ever been in a relationship with anyone?  Have you ever thought about what makes a relationship work?  It IS your relationship with you.  It IS your sense of identity, your boundaries, your negotiation skills, your ability to love rather than be afraid, and your ability to express rather than harbor and resent. Your ability to be in relationship with others is your key to financial, spiritual, emotional, and mental well-being.  Your ability to know yourself will assist you in every context of life.

In the past, I lived in a lot of procrastination.  When I say “the past”, I mean anything even a nano-second in the past.  What I’ve learned from a whole securitous pipe of experiences is that the place of most change is when you’re really terrified, but you take the leap anyway, you just step out into the unknown.  Have you ever done an action over and over and expect a different outcome then the time before?  Did you know that the definition of insanity is: doing the same thing consistently and expecting a different outcome, a different result?

One of my most favorite movies is “The Last Crusade”, where the main character is searching for the Holy Grail out of the love for his father.  He comes to this place after passing through this tunnel of slicing swords and spiders and he arrived to a precipice where he couldn’t even see the bottom.  He closed his eyes and remembered a legend that taught him that when he chooses to step out in pure faith, he’d be supported.  So he stepped out into thin air.  As he did, a path appeared before him.  He made the choice to move through his fear by taking that step, that leap of faith, right through the fear.

Foundational Pre-suppositions

1. There is only two things which motivate human behavior: Love and a call for Love.

2. The agenda of romantic love is to bring light to those childhood wounds left unhealed and to provide an environment to receive and heal those parts of ourselves.

 3. Our behavior is our adaptation to loss.  Change is the catalyst for healing.

4. Our behavior has a positive intention given the resources we have available to us at the time.

5. We are in relationship with ourselves in the context of another.  Our relationships provide us with a mirror in which to see those parts of ourselves we cannot normally see.

6. Authentic communication is the key ingredient for a successful relationship.  If we are hiding our truth in relationship, we disempower ourselves and create a environment of resentment, projection and fear.

 7. Live from your personal life values with greater congruency between your thought word and deed. The more congruency, the stronger your personal identity.  The stronger your personal identity the healthier the relationship you will create.  You are the common denominator in your relationship history.  When you change your history in relationships will also change.

 8. Understand you distort reality.  Begin your communication with the understanding that you see through your individual filters of your accumulated beliefs and memories.  Be personally accountable for the emotions you are creating based upon the meaning you are giving circumstances in your world.  The map is not the territory.

Gary De Rodriguez

A story about Gary

The emotionally shattered young woman who was literally carried into Gary De Rodriguez’ office by friends did not want to live.  Weeks before, she and her fiancé were kayaking in a glacial cave in Alaska when an ice stalactite broke loose from the cave ceiling and struck the man on the head, killing him.

”When Juno died,” recalls Sue Harley, now of Denver, Colorado, “all my dreams and hopes, my whole future, died with him.”

De Rodriguez, founder of the Santa Fe, NM based Life Design International Training Center and creator of the Life Design Trainings, had a reputation for helping people use the untapped power of their mind to heal their body and spirit.  For Harley, De Rodriguez was her last chance to live.

”I immediately knew I could trust him when I told him the story of Juno’s death, and he cried right along with me,” Harley said.  “Then he helped me find my way back from total despair through a timeline process by showing me my future.”  Through this gentle, powerful method of harnessing and directing the power of the mind, Harley said, she began to see more and more exciting reasons to keep on living.  In the new future she was mentally creating, she saw an attractive man with an accent; children; a new home.  By imagining these mental pictures, and feeling the joyful emotions that accompanied them, Harley began to embrace her future life with enthusiasm.

Six months after completing her work with De Rodriguez, Harley said she met a cute man from Australia – and the future she designed for herself became real.

As astounding as Harley’s physical and spiritual recovery was, De Rodriguez says each of us holds the key for such dramatic change in our minds.

“We choose our heaven or our hell inside of our own neurology,” De Rodriguez explains.  “The pictures we’re mentally contemplating, the words we’re speaking in our internal dialogue, and the emotions we’re producing all become our reality and determine any limits to our success.”

De Rodriguez speaks from experience.  He traveled a winding and uphill spiritual path to overcome the hurts of his past – child abuse, juvenile drug addiction, paralyzing depression, the agony of seeing friends waste away from AIDS.  Fifteen years meditating three hours a day in an ashram in India didn’t heal the hurt or catapult him into spiritual bliss. Studying and teaching positive disciplines like “A Course In Miracles” helped, but didn’t fix everything.  It wasn’t until De Rodriguez discovered the mental management tools of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) that he was able to completely release the old pains and refocus his life.

”Realize that the brain is a computer,” De Rodriguez explains, “and NLP is very much the owner’s manual for the human body.  It teaches us how we created our beliefs, our values, our individual perceptions and the foundation of our personality.”  Through NLP technologies, says De Rodriguez, we can see how some aspects of our personalities cut to the very root of our ability to be successful. When we understand how we created those flawed thinking patterns, we can learn how to redirect them.

Deeply committed to helping to raise world consciousness, De Rodriguez built a complete spiritual element on top of basic NLP to create Life Design Trainings – his system of using the mind-body connection to achieve excellence in every aspect of life.  His unique approach is being embraced by people from all walks of life, including professionals seeking to establish a more balanced and successful career path.

Los Angeles Attorney Sylvia Esquivel said De Rodriguez helped her gain a better understanding of how differently each person sees the world based on their past experiences.

”Once you understand this of yourself,” she says, “you can understand that other people have their own perspectives which are not right or wrong, but which are or may be different.  Becoming aware of this alone is priceless — and it helps in releasing one’s point of view of ‘I’m right, he is wrong’ in personal, business or other types of interactions.”

For a successful San Diego Realtor who participated in De Rodriguez’ 12-day Life Design Training Practitioner certification program, the biggest benefit was a dramatic shift in his ability to solve problems.

”If I got stuck on something, I had lots of different options I didn’t know about before,” he said.  As a result, the Realtor says, things that previously would bother him no longer have power, and he’s more confident, happier and able to build instant rapport with prospective clients.

”Where most training programs fail is they never teach the individual how to manage their own internal state,” says Rodriguez.  “They put on blanket Band-Aids – ‘this technique is for diversity, and this technique is for communicating.’ But that training is all about your external behavior – and what’s happening internally is what’s driving the external behavior.

”What they’re doing is putting a Band-Aid over the already established ACT.  They’re trying to shift behavior at the behavioral level, and you can NEVER shift behavior at the behavioral level.  You must use the power of the mind to permanently shift behaviors.”

Psychotherapist Adam Colson interacts daily with homeless and destitute people.

“A huge challenge in my work is establishing rapport with down-on-their-luck individuals, and working with them to shift their mental outlook and create well-focused goals,” Colson says.  “I’ve studied many different forms of therapy, and Life Design Training techniques help people change their behaviors more quickly and effectively than anything else I’ve tried.”

“If people had just the basic mental tools,” said De Rodriguez, “they could start improving their lives immediately.  Where they get into the most pain is feeling like they don’t have choices.  I desire to teach people they have the resources and choices to choose a different road, and a magnificent future.”
