How Do You Know You Are You?

An NLP Refresher

man floatingPart of the human experience is to wonder how it is you came to be the person you are. This kind of self awareness is what differentiates us from the rest of the species that inhabit this planet. From the moment you descended from your Mother’s womb you have been creating a belief system: It’s cold. I’m hungry. There’s no love here. Mom is scared. Etc., etc.

As we continue to ascribe meaning to the world around us, we constantly perceive our experiences through the filters of our belief system. As an infant, our experience and perceptual ability is limited and thus are the beliefs we create at that time. We did our best with the tools we had. And as we continue to experience life, we continue filtering our impressions of the world around us based on that core belief system, flawed as it may be. Any new beliefs we acquire are—often with tragic results—based upon a core belief system that is limited in scope and has perhaps outlived its real purpose in our lives. Yet we continue to rely on this shaky structure because it has serviced us for so long. We know nothing else!

Some of our early choices can be our greatest allies or our most persistent tormentors. If our choices torment us, years of heartache may result. Yet because our filters our muddied by incorrect belief systems, we manifest the same heartache over and over and over again.

What most of us fail to realize is that whatever we perceive to be an inescapable reality is merely a creation of our own making. This is because we each respond to the people around us via an emotional state we’ve elicited from the meanings we create and assign to the people in our lives. This is how our identity and self esteem evolves.

In summary:

THOUGHT POWER + BELIEF = EMOTIONS = BEHAVIOR & ACTION = REACTION TO THE WORLD = EGO IDENTITY

So I ask you this: Is your ego identity helping or hindering the fulfillment of your life purpose?

Next time I’ll discuss the three elements of your psyche which bring about the reality you experience as your today, as your tomorrow, and yes, as your past.
